Top 10 Eco-friendly Clothing and Accessory Finds of 2013

top 10 ecofriendly clothing finds of 2013

Before we head into 2014, I'm excited to take a look back at some of the amazing, eco-friendly and made in the USA discoveries I have been lucky enough to make over the course of 2013.

Writing this blog has opened up my eyes to so many creative, talented designers who are using kind, thoughtful materials and treating their workers with respect and dignity. This post is by no means an exhaustive list of the the companies I want to highlight-- for example, I LOVE sustainable designers Ace and Jig and Heidi Merrick, but I could only pick ten favorites, and here they are:

4 jcrew collaboration Bailey felt hat made in the USA

#10 Bailey Hat Company for JCrew Fedora
JCrew has been doing more collaborations lately, mostly for men, but sometimes for us ladies, too. This hat is made here in the USA of 100% felt, which is a very eco-friendly, sturdy, recyclable fabric. Add to that the hats "packable" feature, and it's perfecto. This fedora (see how I styled it HERE) is on sale and available right now for a deep discount that makes it $47 with code SHOPHAPPY.

Be sure to try out JCrew's handy "made in the USA" search button functionality to find more collaborations that support American manufacturers and craftspeople. For some reason, you can only find this magical button after clicking on "Men" and looking in the left column under "shop by category"-- the same link is not available under "Women," perhaps because the Bailey hat is the only women's item that is made in the USA?

Dear JCrew: more collabs with artisans and American manufacturers, please! You can do it!
8 vera wang made in the usa what to wear to a fall wedding

#9 The Vera Wang Sheath Dress
I was so pleased to learn that this Vera Wang dress was made here in the USA.  Sadly, it's seems very difficult to find dresses by Vera Wang that are made here. Most that I found when writing this post were made in China or otherwise, "imported," so even though I love this dress, it only ranks #9. See how I styled it HERE and HERE.

There is, however, an eco-friendly way to wear this and many other dresses like it, and that's by using Rent the Runway. It's a wonderful way to wear the perfect dress to a special event at a fraction of the cost, and then send it right back so that someone else can wear it, too!

3 kelly wearstler cage shirt made in the usa mesh cut-out

#8 Kelly Wearstler
Kelly Wearstler was another refreshing made in the USA discovery. I love her design aesthetic, and of course I'd rather support someone who is still making some clothing and a good part of her jewelry stateside, so this Secondi find was very exciting. See how I styled this top HERE, and take 25% off of all of her sale items on Shopbop right now with code EXTRAOFF25.

4 teeki northern lights hot pants my fair vanity yoga made in USA ecofashion blog rachel mlinarchik

#7 Teeki
I teamed up with  photographer Jason Hornick, surface designer Aaryn West,  and dancers from Capitol Movement to shoot and style these super-fun, colorful leggings. Teeki leggings are made in Los Angeles from recycled plastic bottles, if you can believe it, and the ones I'm wearing are super soft, stretchy, and confortable. Highly recommend. See how I styled them  HERE and HERE.

fair vanity capitol movement brunch made in usa outfit post style blog 3

#6 Koral Jeans
This relatively new jeans company makes stretchy and comfy jeans. They don't make this color-blocked version anymore, but they have plenty of other fun options and the fit is great.  They are the jeans version of my Teeki leggings.

See how I styled them HERE and HERE, and take 25% off any pairs on sale at SHOPBOP with code EXTRAOFF25.

clover canyon patterned shorts made in the usa my fair vanity

#5 Clover Canyon
I had no idea that trippy pattern players Clover Canyon made their clothing in the USA. Easily found at larger retailers like Nordstrom but just as likely to pop up in that local, fashion-forward boutique you just discovered, this a a great brand to depend on for some serious statement pieces if you're the adventurous type. See how I styled them HERE.

reformation sustainable upcycled fashion

#4 Reformation
Reformation repurposes vintage and surplus materials to limited edition collections each season. Each collection is made locally in their own New York and Los Angeles studios and then sold directly to their own physical stores or online customers. The bag in the left photo is made from vintage fur coats and vintage leather, for example. The plaid shirt on the left is made from surplus fabric.

What I like about this line is their local production and the knowledge that each piece was created using fabrics that were already in existence--it's a lighter footprint than ordering new fabrics each season, and re-styling out of date garments is, of course, eco-fab. See how I styled my favorite pieces HERE and HERE.

8 amour vert chambray shirt dress organic cotton made in usa

#3 Amour Vert
Although this organic, chambray shirt dress was a recent purchase, I've been an admirer of Amour Vert for quite some time. They employ a zero-waste design philosophy and use only organic and sustainable fabrics along with low impact dyes to make their line in San Francisco. They check so many eco-friendly boxes that a purchase from Amour Vert is a no-brainer for any ethical fashion enthusiast.

Describing themselves as s Cali-cool meets Paris chic, they have casual dresses, party dresses, button down silk shirts, and even a few trousers to choose from.  What I love most is that each season, their designs only seem to get better and better. I loved their holiday line, and I strongly recommend checking it out.

See how I styled my newest Amour Vert purchase HERE.

11 pikolinos american apparel my fair vanity rachel mlinarchik fashion blog ecofashion

#2 Pikolinos Sandals
Pikolinos sandlas are handmade in Spain using natural processes, and the particular pair I found are part of their fair trade "Masaii Project." More than 1,600 Maasai women embroider Pikolinos’s leather with their typical patterns, colors and designs. Once they are embroidered, the products are sent back to Spain, where the shoes and bags are finished and distributed. Each Maasai woman earns a fair wage for her embroidery work, and when a collection is finished, the community receives an extra payment recognizing the men's and children‘s collaboration and involvement.

All of their leathers contain casein, a protein found in milk that adheres to leather pores and produces greater shine. The leather is not covered with any type of resin nor protective plastic film. Additionally, at Pikolinos.com you'll find shoes with Cyclonatura, a 100% hypoallergenic, ecological and metal-free leather.

Brands that are dedicated to high quality craftsmanship and socially empowering collaborations get a big thumbs up in my book. And for the record: these are the most comfortable sandals I have ever owned. They are like butter, and never needed to be worn in. They feel so good to wear, in all the ways that count. See how I styled them HERE and HERE

stella mccartney vegan ankle boots

#1 My Stella McCartney Ankle Boots
Like all of Stella McCartney's offerings, these shoes are vegan-friendly and made under ethical conditions. I found this pair second-hand at Secondi, but I always look for her sales because I like supporting a company that devotes so much thought to constantly improving the kindness and sustainabliliyy of its products. A browse through their sustainability policies and efforts is worth a few moments of your time.

These ankle boots rank #1 bc they are definitely some of my most-worn, well-loved shoes EVER. They were last seen all over this here blog (HERE with a cashmere sweaterdress, HERE, with some major floral graphic prints, and HERE with black, white and nude).

Do you have any favorite eco-friendly clothing or accessory finds that you'd like to share? Please do tell in the comments, or drop me a link on Facebook- I'd love to hear from you!

My Ethical Christmas Elf Outfit: Color-blocked Jeans, Plaid Flannel, & Aid Through Trade Bracelets

aid through trade bracelets ethical fashion sustainable style

This weekend was all about last minute elf-like activities: shopping, wrapping, and tidying in preparation for holiday guest arrivals, so I of course I had to don the ultimate in elf colors: red and green.

2 aid through trade bracelets ethical fashion sustainable style

You can only see my true Christmas spirit from the side, though, when both my color-blocked Koral jeans (made in the USA, similar HERE) and my trusty flannel from circa 1995 are visible (flannel last seen HERE, fair trade and festive option HERE, by Ace & Jig).

4 plaid through trade bracelets ethical fashion sustainable style

It goes without saying that any Christmas elf worth their weight in cookies needs to sport some sparkle to fully embody the holiday spirit, so I mixed in my new roll-on bracelets-- recently received c/o Aid Through Trade-- into my usual wristwear.  Each Aid Through Trade piece is handmade by artisans in Nepal under fair trade conditions. In fact, the founder of Aid Through Trade was also one of the founding members of the Fair Trade Federation.

Above, I'm wearing three bracelets from Aid Through Trade's "Midnight in Paris" color way, but there are endless color combos and so many other neat pieces in their line, so I strongly recommend checking them out!You can purchase several colors- including the ones I'm wearing- on Amazon, and some of them are Amazon Prime eligible.

An Eco-Friendly Guide to Washington, DC, Plus My Favorites from Sustainable Retailer Ethica

christmas in washington dc
Image via Washington Post

If you've got family and friends headed into to town to visit you this Christmas and New Year's, or if you are planning a holiday jaunt to DC, this is the green city guide for you!

I put together my favorite local (and sustainable) spots for the folks over at Ethica to empower you and your guests to enjoy local shopping and sample fresh, local food while you're in town. While this is only a tiny fraction of all that DC has to offer, it's a great place to start if you'd like to skip all of the chain restaurants and shop some stores that you won't find in your local mall.

Inside the guide, you'll also learn a little bit more about why I started My Fair Vanity, and what it's like to blog about ethical fashion (hint: awesome!).

Happy Holidays, and don't forget to take 40% off everything at Ethica with code JINGLEBELLS

Here are a few of my favorites:

shop ethica favorites from my fair vanity ethical fashion

RINGS:
Every Bing Bang piece is made in the U.S.A., handcrafted either in the company's NYC studio or in Rhode Island.

EARRINGS:
All Nicole Romano jewelry is handcrafted in Rhode Island and uses 30% recycled metals, as well a mix of vintage and new stones. The company is an active supporter of the USAMade initiative to revive domestic jewelry manufacturing.

NECKLACE:
Mettle Fair Trade works with small, non-profit co-ops in Cambodia and Indonesia. Owned by the workers, these co-ops generate income and provide training for all members. The entire Mettle Fair Trade line is handmade and fair trade-certified, and the collections are produced in limited editions using recycled bomb-shell metal and lucite, as well as gold and eco-friendly, vegetable-tanned leather.

HAT:
Kordal knitwear is designed and handcrafted in New York City. Designer Mandy Kordal carefully sources all materials, as well as oversees production. The company favors the use of all-natural fibers whenever possible. Small-batch production and emphasis on making by hand minimizes Kordal's environmental impact. Leftover yarn from previous collections is used to create one-of-a-kind pieces.

PANTS:
Ace & Jig textiles are made from natural hand-dyed fibers Artisanal fabrics are woven on an ancient hand loom in India. Weavers receive free childcare and the textile factory uses reclaimed water to grow organic produce for its employees.

CLUTCH:
By Mettle Fair Trade (see above for more info).

BLOUSE:
Valentine Gauthier uses natural fibers and organic fabrics. Production of the brand's eco-friendly clothing and accessories takes place in small workshops in South America and in collaboration with NGOs, so the production process supports the development of skilled workers. Fabrics are sourced in the same country that items are produced to minimize environmental impact.

Traveling in Sustainable Style {Concordia Eco Resort, Saint John, USVI}

amour vert chambray shirt dress, organic cotton, made in usa, concordia eco resort

With temperatures dropping, the holidays looming, and neither of us having had a real vacation in more than a year, my husband and I decided to take a week-long jaunt to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Although we didn't intend to be quite so off-the-grid (my apologies for the week without a post!), it was really nice to unplug and slow down. The highlight of of trip was, easily, our stay at Concordia Eco Resort on Saint John.

concordia premium eco tents, saint john USVI, eco-travel, sustainable style

We opted for the eco-tents, and were pleasantly surprised to find that we'd been upgraded to the newer "premium" tents, which were built higher up on the windier side of hill. Concordia's layout is similar to Aqua Wellness Resort in Nicaragua, in that each unit is built into the natural landscape and all walkways are raised, so as not to disturb the delicate eco-system beneath our feet. One of my New Year's Resolutions is to properly write up and share the amazing eco-ness that is Aqua, but for now, we'll stick to my most recent sustainable sojourn.

concordia premium eco tents, saint john USVI, eco-tourism, sustainable style

Each morning and evening, I stood (or sat, or generally lounged) on our balcony and looked out at this unbelievable, unobstructed view of the southeastern edge of Saint John. There's a rocky beach to the left, and just over to the right is the calm, crystal clear Salt Pond Bay, accessible via a 15 minute walk through a nature trail (or a quick drive, if preferred).

This stunning view is what you're paying for in Concordia's nightly rates, which might at first seem a little high for "eco tents,"  but I have to say our stay was worth every single penny.

amour vert chambray shirt dress, organic cotton, made in usa, concordia eco resort

None of the eco-tents are air-conditioned, but as you can see, A/C was not necessary with the powerful winds that crossed from the rockier side of the island, only to be tamed by our little hill before they reached the calm waters of the Bay.

concordia premium eco tent

Each "tent" is really a small wooden cabin with a tented roof and zip-down, screened windows that give a near-panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. There's a gas stove, refrigerator, cookware, ample lighting, and a separate (private) bathroom with a solar-heated shower. In fact, each unit is powered by solar panels that sit just under the balcony (ours are shown below).

concordia eco tents

Beaches are my jam, so our first stop was Salt Pond Bay, which has excellent snorkeling and crystal clear water (as do pretty much all of the beaches and bays on Saint John, to be fair). The nature trail from the Concordia property was easy enough in flip-flops and takes you past some old ruins and ginormous cactus plants, which dot all parts of the island.

concordia eco resort nature trail to rams head

From the beach, there are further trails that take you past the local flora and fauna and out to yet another stunning, panoramic view of Saint John.

On the way back down from our hike (along the Ram's Head Trail), we caught a glimpse of Concordia and Salt Pond Bay from afar.

*Please pardon my attire-- I go full-on Katie Perry/Beyoncé on vacation, and prefer not to wear pants unless absolutely, 100% necessary. Pants were not necessary for this hike. In my opinion.

I couldn't have wished for a better retreat from the hustle, bustle, and freezing rain/sleet/snow of DC in December. Nor, for that matter, could I have wished for a better dinner/beach cover-up/all-purpose vacay dress than this 100% organic cotton chambray number from eco-friendly label Amour Vert to wear while I lazed around the eco-resort.Just as an FYI, the dress I'm wearing is now deeply discounted to $52. Just sayin.

But seriously, you guys: THAT VIEW.

Let it Snow

winter ootd upcycled bag by reformation sustainable fashion

You're probably not supposed to wear fur in the snow, but it feels like you should wear fur when it snows, doesn't it? And I know, it doesn't seem like an eco-fashion type lady like me would be wearing fur at all, but this fur is...different.

winter ootd upcycled bag by reformation vintage fur

I'm sure by now you've noticed my new obsession with Reformation (see HERE and HERE), a line that upcycles deadstock and remnant fabrics to create their fresh, edgy line of apparel and accessories. That line includes this tote bag, which is made from vintage fur coats and leather jackets. In my mind, there is a future world in which real fur items will be extraordinarily rare, like diamonds, because no one makes things out of fur anymore (unless they actually live in conditions that would require killing an animal to wear its fur, which I also hope is not necessary for anyone in this future utopia).

What I'm saying is, to me, it's the ultimate investment piece, like I just purchased an undervalued stock or piece of land. Is that crazy?

3 winter ootd upcycled bag by reformation sustainable fashion

It's also two-sided, so I can rock just a hint of fur lining the edges on one side or go full-out and risk having paint thrown on me. But I understand I am taking that risk, so it's OK.

I'm pretty proud of this outfit because it's comprised of nearly 100% vintage, second-hand or upcycled pieces, from the umbrella to the shoes. Absolutely no new fabrics were cut or woven to put together this look (with the exception of my black tights), and each lovely accessories or garments was saved from the possibility of an untimely and gruesome death-by-landfill. Everybody wins!

5 winter ootd upcycled bag by reformation sustainable fashion

The vegan Stella McCartney ankle boots, the Botega Venetta skirt, the sweater, and the J Crew jacket were all purchased second-hand from Secondi. And the umbrella is very special to me bc it was my Dad's.

Always the bargain hunter, it was acquired as one of those premiums you receive if you spend enough on cologne or after-shave, and it's surprisingly well-made and beautifullly designed by Aramis. You don't often come across free umbrellas with real wooden handles these days, hmm? I definitely inherited my love for finding a 'good deal' on a quality product from my father, and I think of him whenever I use it. :)

Last but not least, I've already told you about the bag. Which, FYI, is majorly on sale right now at Reformation, and comes in two colors (1, 2). Just sayin.

H&M says it wants to begin guaranteeing a living wage to the workers in its factories-- what they mean by "living wage" and how they propose to do it is unclear, but I'm happy to hear they are thinking about it...? (NYT)

Alden Wicker of Ecocult explains the high cost of an organic t-shirt on Refinery29. (R29)

Stephanie Clifford of the NYT examines the ‘Made in U.S.A.’ Premium . Take away: "it is the shoppers who will make this movement [towards American-made goods] succeed or fail." (NYT)

Luke Leitch discusses why "ethical fashion only works when it appeals to our vanity as much as our conscience."  This is an older article, but it goes a long way towards explaining the rationale behind the name of my blog,  its content, and why it's challengin but certainly not impossible to be fashion-conscious and eco-conscious. The Way to a Man's Heart {and, um, anyone's heart, obvi}

The old saying goes that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. But let's be real-- everyone loves food. Especially food that tastes good and is made of natural, wholesome, and/or local ingredients. Aside from a trusty bottle of local or organic wine, tasty snacks make great gifts to bring to holiday parties to share or give as host/hostess gifts. Here are eight treats that I'm eager to give out this year:

hostess gifts, gifts for him, food for the holidays

Clockwise from top left:
  • Founded in 1888, the family-owned Squirrel Brand Co. is one of the oldest roasted nut companies in the country. From crème brûlée almonds to herb-tossed pecans to dry-roasted pistachios, they make for a delectable gift or treat for yourself. Made in McKinney, Texas.
  • Stumptown Coffee Roasters was founded in Portland in 1999 (the name refers to the city’s historic logging legacy). After years of traveling around the world to develop relationships with coffee producers, Stumptown launched their Direct Trade program, which allows them to source the best coffee in the world while making sustainable and financial improvements in growing communities around the globe. And the coffee is so, SO good. Local DC folk can drink a cup at Filter or Dolcezza, in addition to giving a bag as a gift.
  • One dozen cholate chip cookie dough chocolate truffles. I mean, I feel like I don't have to write more than that. Handmade to order from Amadeos Bakery and Candy Company. You have to look through the rest of their store to see the amazing treats this Italian baker makes!
  • This Beer Making Kit is made in the USA and available from Nordstrom. If your recipient is not the crafty type (like me), they might also appreciate a six pack of craft beer made in your city. In the DC area, my favorites are Port City Brewing Company from my hometown of Alexandria, VA, DC Brau, and Resurrection Ale from the Brewer's Art in Baltimore, Md. If you have a favorite local beer, tell me about it in the comments, please--  I loooooove local craft beer. :)
  • From AHALife: "For the 2013 holiday season City Grit's Sarah Simmons has selected the Made in Brooklyn, a new basket to be distributed exclusively through AHAlife and Daily Candy. This chef-driven basket includes Empire Mayo in Lime Pickle, McClure's Bloody Mary Mix, Mike's Hot Honey, Baking Bean Gingerbread Sandwich Cookie and Brooklyn's Roasting Company Coffee and a two-sided recipe card. One recipe is for Sarah's Fried Chicken, perfectly paired with Mike's Hot Honey, and the other for Deviled Eggs using Empire Mayo's Lime Pickle." Sounds awesome to me.
  • Just Cook Food Rubs are made in San Francisco by married couple Scott Lucas and Cathy Storfer and their chef friend Daniel Capra. Flavors include names like Herbed Coffee, Ancho Chicken, and Gimmie Steak.
  • Leckerlee treats are handmade for you in NYC, and they claim to be the only modern-day lebkuchen artisan in the New World. 100% natural with no preservatives. Highest-quality ingredients including nearly 40% nut content by weight (almonds, hazelnuts, marzipan), NY state honey, candied citron and orange peel, and our proprietary cold-ground 9-spice blend. Less than 10% wheat flour.
  • Tates Bakeshop cookies are the best cookies I have ever had from a bag. They're made in New York. They're delicious. They're $5.99. They're available at your local Whole Foods, or at least they are at mine. But you can order them online here.
