Right now I'm loving the look of a vintage tee, white jeans and ankle boots for spring. You can keep the look clean with a tailored jacket or keep it tough with a leather jacket, it's up to you, but by all means, keep it fair.

T-shirts are are vintage from Etsy:

White Jeans are all made in the USA by

Ankle boots are all pre-owned from Ebay:

P.S. Apologies for the radio silence, guys! Between the show and the flu, things have been crazed. I miss you!

I don't know about you, but I see people doing contemporary ballet and dancing around ALL the time in Dupont Circle, so I thought, why not join in?  ;)

I also thought it would be a neat way to share with you that I will be performing this Saturday, March 23, at the Lincoln Theater. I will be joined by dozens of amazingly talented dancers that I am lucky to call fellow company members.

I would love to have you join us for what will surely be an evening of high energy, incredibly diverse dance. Capitol Movement's repertoire includes contemporary, hip-hop, jazz and various ethnic styles, because we commission both locally- and nationally-renowned choreographers to set pieces for us each year. If none of those words mean anything to you, google So You Think You Can Dance and it will all start to make sense, I promise. Or, you can check out our Instagram for a behind the scenes look at our rehearsals.

If you'd like to rock your own studded ballet flats to our show, there is a wonderful DIY post over on Orange Juice. If you'd rather just buy a handmade pair, you can buy here or here.

To get the full look fairly, I strongly recommend purchasing your work-out t-shirts and leggings from Alternative Apparel, who have strict sustainability and labor standards, or American Apparel, who manufacture their clothes in the USA. Both retailers offer organic cotton items and are my go-to when it comes to workout and dance gear.

If you've read this far, I'd like to tell you a little bit about our dance company, which is definitely kind to people and to the earth. In addition to our recent tour through the Mediterranean and Africa (here is me in Egypt!) to perform for the men and women of our armed services in partnership with Armed Forces Entertainment, we also offer
    • free classes and performances for DC public school students,
    • scholarships to our youth training programs and to prestigious college dance programs across the country, and
    • classes here in DC that anyone can pay to take.

Since it is Women's History Month, it's important to note that Capitol Movement is co-founded and directed by two local DC women who give their hearts and souls to our company each and every day. Amber Yancey and Stephanie Jojokian are two of the hardest working women in DC, managing children, day jobs and a non-profit dance company with a smile and some serious sweat. They are amazing, our show is amazing, and as if you needed one more reason to come, remember that your ticket purchase supports badly needed arts education for young people in the DMV area.

    :)

    xo

    Black & White & Refinery29

Refinery29, 4 style stars, 1 major spring trend, style stalking, march 7 2013, rachel mlinarchik, street style

What's black and white and can be worn all over? Pretty much anything in spring 2013, and it looks like Refinery29 agrees.

This week, I was honored to be included in the Refinery29 street style section along with so many of my fellow CapFABB members! With Liz of So Much to Smile About, Eden of Garden of Glam, and Sara of High Fashion for Less,  I gave one example of how I planned to wear one of spring's hottest trends: black and white.

You can see the full post on Refinery29 here, and you can see my full outfit from that day here.

I'm really pleased about this particular trend because it's such an eco-friendly one. Basic black and white pieces are a sound investment because they will never go out of style, even if the particular way we wear them can change from season to season or year to year.

How do you plan to incorporate black and white into your everyday look this year?

After ogling the exquisite Mayan artifacts and jewelry in the Phillip Johnson Pavillion, Victoria and I walked through the rare book collection of the Dumbarton Oaks Museum, which was equally as beautiful and thus deserved its own post. If you haven't yet had the chance to pay a visit to Dumbarton Oaks, I can't stress enough that it's worth a (free!) visit.

I spent a perfect Sunday afternoon at Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection last Sunday with my friend and photographer extraordinaire, Victoria. Founded by Robert Woods Bliss and Mildred Barns Bliss and now administered by Harvard University, the museum and libraries are housed in what I would certainly call one of Georgetown's hidden gems.

Filled with natural light, beautiful pre-Columbian artifacts and Mayan jewelry, Dumbarton Oaks is the ideal place to spend your next free weekend.

Tune in on Friday to see more of our visit.

    Three Wishes

    mode marteau DVF vintage sundress

tangerine dream homemade marshmallow for easter 2

    1. I love everything about this bag by Love, Cortnie: the pop of tangerine on the inside, the pattern, and the fact that it's handmade here in the U.S.A. It's perfect for spring and right on into summer, so if you like it, you'd better pounce, because I think there's only one left. I, however, am in a shopping holding pattern after my, er, recent investment
    2. My second wish is to wear this breezy (second-hand) DVF dress from Mode Marteau while laying on a beach somewhere sipping a pina colada. As soon as possible.
    3. For now, I will settle for a few of these yummy homemade gourmet marshmallows, just in time for Easter.  No high-fructose corn syrup and no preservatives in these babies, so they're basically a health food.

There was a lot of black, white and nude coming down the Spring 2013 runways from Jason Wu, Stella McCartney and The Row, and it inspired me to get back to the basics.

Black and white is so easy, and my spring resolution is to stock up on crisp white shirts and warm camel or nude pullovers. These are staples that will never go out of style and can adapt easily to the seasons as they change, while also creating a neutral palette for the bright lips and neon accessories that seems to be holding strong as trends.

I am more than ready for spring, so I had bust out the white jeans. What do you think about white jeans for winter?
