Meet Antik Batik: Super Sparkly Upscale Boho

I have to confesss that until I saw Antik Batik over on ethical fashion retailer Shop Accompany, I had no idea they were considered to be an ethical fashion brand. But lucky for all of us fair fashion lovers, they are.

Founder Gabriella Cortese created the company with the hope of preserving the artisanal embroidering, printing and hand-weaving techniques she saw in her travels, meaning that each Antik Batik piece is handmade by artisans who are expert in their craft.  From what I understand, the brand was a pioneer in its ethical approach, working with qualified artisans in Indonesia, in Peru and then in India in order to manufacture entirely handmade clothes and accessories as far back as 15 years ago, long before it made sense to brag about such a thing.

To me, these are the kind of standout, truly special pieces you could hold onto and pass along to your daughters and their daughters, not to mention the fact that their insouciant sparkle is perfect for the upcoming holiday season (is it too soon to say that?).

Here are a few more pieces I'm coveting:

Eco-friendly Fall Essentials from AHALife

I don't know about you, but I am ready for fall! And to celebrate it's arrival, I've picked out a few of my favorites from AHAlife, one of my favorite online resources for discovering thoughtful, on-trend brands. And just through today, you can take 24% off of your first purchase on their site with code AHANEW.

I'm a big fan of AHAlife not just because they seek out thoughtful brands creating high-quality goods, but because they disclose the details of each item so well on their site. With one click, I can see whether something is handmade or organic, where it is made, and sometimes even how it is made. They tell the story behind their products quite thoroughly and I wish more online retailers would do the same.

In the (shoppable) image above, you can find:
  • Shwood sunglasses, handmade in Oregon from sustainably harvested wood.
  • Botkier tote (also available in a more conservative all-tan or all-black), made in the USA.
  • Cuff by Kelly Wearstler, made in the USA of gold-plated brass. I wish it were recycled gold plated brass.
  • Organic Pink Fijian Tea, made in Fiji.
  • Wool Wrap: Crafted from hand-combed Mongolian yak wool, designer Khunu worked directly with herder communities to responsibly source its yak wool which is then crafted in the oldest textile workshop in Mongolia. Boom.
  • Wrap clutch (also in this size) by Busk and Bask. Hand-crafted from vegetable-tanned leather, Chicago screws and a solid teak wood floor.

Evil Eyes and Turkish Delights

SUN DRESS is made with fair labor practices by LemLem; Handmade brass and enamel CUFF and EARRINGS by Dream Collective for Of a Kind. STUFFED ELEPHANT is fair trade by Indego Africa. Proud Mary raffia D'Orsay SHOES for Of a Kind are handmade by fair trade artisans in Morocco.

Founded around 660 BC as Byzantium, the city now known as Istanbul developed to become one of the most significant cities in history, serving for nearly sixteen centuries as the capital of four empires: the Roman Empire (330–395), the Byzantine Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922).  Its location along the Silk Road only added to the rich tapestry of cultures that converged to form what is today Europe's largest urban population (14.1 million) and the fifth largest city in the world.

In today's post, I invite you to join me on a visual (and shop-able!) journey through this frenetic and beautiful city, from its cool blue tiles to its saffron spices. I've gathered dozens of eco-friendly and ethical pieces from across the interwebs that remind me of the sights and sounds of Istanbul, and I think you'll find more than a few treasures you'll have to take home.

From the endless candied fruits and Turkish delights, to the colorful carpets, to the blue of the Bosphorous Sea, there is no shortage of beauty to behold in Istanbul, and this post can only contain a fraction of what I saw.

AHALIFE is Totally Clutch

2 ahalife wooden clutch and straw clutch handmade

I discovered ahalife when I was putting together my Christmas gift guides, and I found it to be an excellent resource for any genre of gift giving I was focusing on. From the beautifully designed cookies to sustainable watches to fancy, locally-made condoms (yuuuup!), it's become a go-to retail site for many of my ethical shopping and blogging needs, so of course I had to share it with you  ASAP!

Ahalife positions itself as part of "global community of conscious consumers" within "a generation that is shifting away from disposable goods and moving towards objects of quality, craftsmanship and meaning." Lovin' it.

The only problem I have with the site is that there isn't quite enough information in the descriptions about the products and how they are made, at least not enough for us "conscious" folks. Here, I've shown you a collection of clutches for which I could verify that they were handmade, made in the USA, had a social impact, etc., but there were many more I would have included if I were able to divine those important details.

It makes sense that the details aren't always there, though, becuase AHALife doesn't have an eco-focus, but instead aims to "empower designers, artisans and innovators to thrive online" in a world dominated by larger corporations. Much like Of a Kind, part of their appeal is their razor sharp curation. In the case of ahalife, that audience is made up of well-traveled, fashion-forward lovers of luxe, whereas the Of a Kind customer might be more laid back, and perhaps skew younger.

The similarities to Of a Kind don't stop there, though, since ahalife is also about promoting smaller, independent businesses, and capitalizing on the emotional connection customers can make with a product when they know something about who has made it, or how, or better yet, why. Their celeb-studded list of "curators" doesn't hurt either, and includes heavy hitters like Iris Apfel and Tim Gunn.

Scroll through the clutches below to see a few of my fair favorites. These little bags are priced from $35 all the way up to $945, which is a (sort of) a reasonable pricepoint considering the skill, artistry, and labor that went into a few of these babies.

But ahalife isn't just clutches-- it just happens that their clutch collection happens is ahhh-mazing.  Below are a few more of my favorite non-clutch items (at more affordable price points):

*I can personally attest to the awesomeness of this Nau jacket-- my husband has one, and he wears it throughout fall and winter, sometimes as an under-layer when it's REALLY cold, but usually as the perfect winter coat. It's really thin but also really warm. Like magic.

Baby it's Cold Outside

la kaiser snakeskin earrings knit hat aviators

The temperature is dropping and I'm starting to live in my cashmere beanie, which is the perfect frame for my new earrings. This snakeskin and sterling silver pair came to me courtesy of a small line called La Kaiser. Each piece is handcrafted here in the U.S., and at prices ranging from $60-$210, they make a great gift option for the holidays. What's more, a portion of La Kaiser's profits are donated to a scholarship foundation in Zimbabwe.

Finally! Eco-friendly Apparel for the Office {Meet Zady}

4 zady eco-friendly online retailer

I have been anticipating the launch of Zady for some time now, and they're finally here! This is a company I have day-dreamed about starting myself, but I am so happy that someone else has done all the work and done it all so beautifully.

Zady offers sustainable, high-quality and on-trend apparel for men and women.  They also have a message and a mission, and it's right in line with mine and so many others who want to end the fast fashion phenomenon.

Most importantly, though, they have eco-friendly office staples. From conservative collared shirts and trousers to colorful accent accessories, this is one of the only places on the interwebs you can depend on for sustainable workwear. You're welcome, people. You're welcome.

Bonus: if you're wondering where the pretty bracelet you're looking at came from or how it was made, you have a handy little badge system to let you know, in addition to the background narratives included with each item.

And while I do admit some of the prices are pretty high, it's important to remember that investing in timeless pieces that will last decades is worth it, especially when you have the luxury of knowing who made your clothes, where they made them, and how.

So go forth, little grasshoppers, and shop fair!

Keeping it Simple at Bedford Springs {aka Spa Nirvana}

4 bedford springs resort and spa my fair vanity rachel mlinarchik ecofashion blog

Bedford Springs is one of the happiest places on earth. It's like grown-up Disneyworld with no lines. A spa nirvana. An oasis from which you may never want to return...With a beautiful golf course, if you like that sort of thing.

An Omni property since 2007, Bedford Springs Resort is located in the Allegheny Mountains of south Pennsylvania.  In 1984, the resort was designated a National Historic Landmark.

Bedford's eight natural springs feed a beautiful indoor pool and spa. Anyone staying at the hotel can use the heated pool, but you have to book an appointment for one of their spa services to get the full Bedford experience. And believe me, it's worth it.

I first visited the property on a anniversary trip with my husband in February on the recommendation of a friend, and even without the outdoor pool, I was smitten by the first day. I can guarantee that if you pay this place a visit in any season, you won't be disappointed. And just to be clear, Omni is not paying me to say this stuff-- I just love the place that much.

Leopard = Clutch {Eco-friendly Accessories}

I finally took my Love, Cortnie clutch out for a spin and I love it! I actually won it at a charity event hosted by Eden of Garden of Glam and Meaghan of District Sparkle to benefit Safer Shores, an organization that works to reduce trauma and promote healing for children who are victims of abuse. The event was a huge success and raised a lot of money for a very important cause, and I'm so proud of these two ladies for pulling it off.

I can report that my new leopard clutch is roomy enough to fit my wallet, phone, some lipstick, and my "real" camera (I use a Lumix GH3). If you're in the market for a mid-size clutch, there are sooo many to choose from, in colors and patterns that would suit a variety of styles and preferences.

I also want to highlight the story behind the necklace I am wearing. Due to a chance meeting in her local grocery store, the company owner now works alongside women in her community who are recovering from experiences of addiction, trafficking, and prostitution. Together they make each piece by hand. Check out Miriam Designs to see more.
