How to Shop Sustainably at Your Local Mall

how to shop ethically at your local mall

For those of you gearing up to get your holiday shop on this month, I give you the Ultimate Guide to Ethical Holiday Shopping...at the Mall. You can make a positive impact with your purchase power this year without ordering online from niche companies sight unseen. Plenty of stores in your local mall carry well-made products you can feel good about giving or getting.

But, first things first: the most powerful thing you can do in any store is ask, ask ask:

The more retailers hear from their customers that these issues matter, the more they will relay that info to management and seek out ways to provide you, the consumer, with what you want. You hold all the power because you hold the power of purchase.

And now for the shopping fun! Here are several local mall stores that will make it easy to shop ethically this year, and a few of my favorite items from those stores.

Urban Outfitters
{Click to Shop!}

Urban Outfitters Urban Renewal line is made in the USA from upcycled deadstock and vintage fabrics a la groovy new line Reformation. They also carry made in the USA candles and a few clothing brands that make pieces in the USA, like Teeki (just posted about them!), as well as fairly made lines like Ace and Jig.

Anthropologie
{Click to Shop!}

Anthropologie carries an array of sustainable, ethical brands. They have an exclusive collection of home goods from weave-masters Ace & Jig, who make all of their signature patterns in a small factory in India where the workers receive free healthcare and work under fair labor conditions-- look for scarves and table runners. They carry several pieces from Antik Batik, a line dedicated to preserving artisan skills and techniques-- each piece is hand-worked or hand-beaded. Last but not least, they carry several eco-friendly and made in the USA candle lines (including my fave, Voluspa).

Top product: their signature, constantly-burning Capri Blue scent-- you know it as "the Anthro smell," I promise-- is made in Mississippi and hand-poured with soy wax, which is cleaner-burning than paraffin and absorbs scent better. These babies burn for a whopping 85 hours for $28, which is one of the best values I have seen for fancy-pants candles.

Origins
{Click to Shop!}

A gift from Origins in a wonderful way to pamper any special lady or gent in your life. Their ingredients are plant-based and gentle, and you won't find harsh chemicals or parabens here. In fact, you can read about all of their ingredients right now their site, and their sales reps will be able to answer very specific questions.

Nordstrom
Nordstrom has become my favorite department store for many reasons. They carry so many made in the USA, fair trade and ethically-made goods that it's hard to know where to start. But the top items I will be looking for are Voluspa candles, jeans by AG and Paige Denim, and clothes from American-made brands like Wayf (so affordable!) and Bailey44

Bonus: At my location (Pentagon City), I've found that their sales associates are incredibly knowledgeable about their stock and where it's made, so again, don't hesitate to ask. If you're looking online to take advantage of that free shipping (both ways!), you can search any of their departments by "Made in the USA."

Black Friday Bath and Body Works made in the USA

Bath and Body Works
Their bath products may be filled with petro-chemicals and parabens, but their candles are made in the USA, and they make lovely, affordable gifts, especially to bring for the host and hostess of a holiday party.

The list above isn't exhaustive by any means. J Crew, for example, often does collaborations with companies that manufacture here in the USA or that produce handmade goods, for example, mostly in the Men's section.

What {I Want} to Wear on Thanksgiving

I don't know how anything could say Thanksgiving more than a sweater with an eagle on it that kind of looks like a Turkey. Do you?

Black Jeans, Red Flats, Baby Bump {Easy Maternity Style}

black leather moto jacket, pop of color, maternity style, ethical fashion, my fair vanity

This little leather jacket of mine is going to propel me right through fall, I can tell. It just makes everything work, and when you have a ginormous 8 months pregnant belly to deal with, that's pretty impressive.

Here I'm wearing secondhand everything except for the jeans, which are my faves, the Verdugo Ultra Skinny by Paige Denim in Black Dahlia.  They're made in the USA and super comfy. You can find a bunch of different washes at Piperlime and Bloomingdale's, and I love these dark green ones!

The shoes are from Reddz Trading, the sweater is from Ebay, and the jacket is from Secondi.

Full disclosure: these jeans are totally not buttoned, and I was wearing them while on my way to purchase (finally) some black maternity jeans that I could button. I held out for far too long on the maternity jeans thing, and now that I have a few pairs, I feel like I have been torturing myself out of sheer laziness, and it was not worth it.

I'm also wearing a 100% cotton, hand-loomed scarf that I acquired during my trip to Turkey-- I found a fair option for you in the "shop the look" below, but nothing could really match this beautiful, warm and oversize specimen of a scarf/sarong. It's actually the size of a beach towel and perfect for both sand and sun, winter wear, and long flights. It's my new security blanket, basically.

Meet Hatch Collection: Tasteful Maternity Style, 100% Made in the USA

3 hatch maternity jacket made in the usa ethical fashion

WEARING: Hatch Blazer; Alternative Apparel shirt and DVF heels purchased secondhand from Secondi; conventional black pants. PHOTOGRAPHY: Victoria Corkhill.

Pregnant ladies (and pretty much any ladies who think they might want to be a Mom someday), rejoice in all that is Hatch:

  • Easy, on-trend, comfortable wardrobe staples for work and for play that are designed to be worn before, during, and after pregnancy.
  • Entire line is 100% made in the USA
  • Hatch has contributed regularly to charity Every Mother Counts since 2011.

Shop the look, including a few secondhand shoes I dug up from theRealReal:

4 hatch maternity jacket made in the usa ethical fashion

I was lucky enough to receive this beautiful blazer as a gift from a dear friend who turned me on to Hatch. Thank you so much, Kimmie! Above, you can see the real deal, i.e., what I actually wear to work all day: flats. I had the heels on for the District Closets event at Secondi, but for a typical day in the office, I ain't crazy, ya'll, I wear flats. :)

But let's get back to Hatch: they truly have created a robust collection of pieces that any woman would want to wear, pregnant or not. Add to that their commitment to domestic production, high quality, and supporting charities that benefit maternal health, and I think that what may seem at first to be a rather steep price tag begins to make a lot of sense. These are pieces you can invest in (or give as gifts) with confidence, ladies.

And get this: they have several items in their sale section right now that are perfect for fall and winter wear. Again, I kid you not, these are pieces that you will want to wear whether you are preggers or not. Below are seven seasonal staples including a cocoon coat, cocktail dresses, and a tuxedo blazer from Hatch that are all 50% off right now:

And, of course, I can't resist sharing a few more Hatch pieces I am in love with, but which aren't on sale (yet):

Eco-friendly Fall Essentials from AHALife

I don't know about you, but I am ready for fall! And to celebrate it's arrival, I've picked out a few of my favorites from AHAlife, one of my favorite online resources for discovering thoughtful, on-trend brands. And just through today, you can take 24% off of your first purchase on their site with code AHANEW.

I'm a big fan of AHAlife not just because they seek out thoughtful brands creating high-quality goods, but because they disclose the details of each item so well on their site. With one click, I can see whether something is handmade or organic, where it is made, and sometimes even how it is made. They tell the story behind their products quite thoroughly and I wish more online retailers would do the same.

In the (shoppable) image above, you can find:
  • Shwood sunglasses, handmade in Oregon from sustainably harvested wood.
  • Botkier tote (also available in a more conservative all-tan or all-black), made in the USA.
  • Cuff by Kelly Wearstler, made in the USA of gold-plated brass. I wish it were recycled gold plated brass.
  • Organic Pink Fijian Tea, made in Fiji.
  • Wool Wrap: Crafted from hand-combed Mongolian yak wool, designer Khunu worked directly with herder communities to responsibly source its yak wool which is then crafted in the oldest textile workshop in Mongolia. Boom.
  • Wrap clutch (also in this size) by Busk and Bask. Hand-crafted from vegetable-tanned leather, Chicago screws and a solid teak wood floor.

Drifting Under Candy-Colored Skies {Istanbul Travel Diary}

The Hagia Sofia

2 candy-colored trend summer style ethical fashion

When traveling-- and especially when traveling pregnant--comfort is key. With my increasing focus on finding ways to make gym clothes look intentional and stylish, I've found that color can also be key.

By packing a LOT of white, I could switch up any outfit with little pops of citrus or blue here and there, as I did on this day, when we visited the cool caverns of the Basilica Cistern and the sunny public square between the Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque.

I'm wearing my favorite American-made Paige denim jeans, a super soft tank from ethical brand Alternative Apparel, and a conventional sports bra in hot pink.  The credit for this color combo, though, goes not to the sights and sounds of Istanbul but to the citrus-y, psychedelic hues of my friend Aaryn West's designs. She has a rockin' Society6 store and recently added duvets to the items you can acquire in her trippy prints, which I have been ogling since their release-- I strongly recommend checking 'em out!

Istanbump in Istanbul

baby bump, istanbul, ethical fashion, maternity style, blue maxi dress

Soooo...surprise! My husband and I are expecting a very small human to join us this November, right around Thanksgiving. Thus we thought it appropriate to bring our little Turkey to Turkey! If you'd like to follow along on our travel adventures over the next two weeks, join me over on Instagram. Istanbul is only Part 1 of a two-part adventure, so there will be lots to see!

I hope that you will accept this new addition to my family as a totally legitimate excuse for the decrease in posting as of late-- I've been distracted...? But! I vow to supply you with twice and thrice-weekly doses of ethical style inspiration from this day forward.

In today's outfit, I'm wearing (as I so often am) second-hand finds from my favorite DC consignment boutique, Secondi. But no matter where you live, everyone wins, because I found virtually the same maxi dress on sale for $39 at Nordstrom, and it's made in the USA. Yup. You're welcome.

I'm wearing it with a white bucket tote bag (also from Secondi and purchased especially for this trip), a vintage Vera scarf (endless options from $10-$25 on Etsy), and bangles made sustainably by Mango Tree Fitted Bangles.

Black Leather & Summer Whites {Made in the USA by Trina Turk}

2 trina turk dress white cotton eyelet made in the usa summer style
WEARING Trina Turk cotton eyelet "Marquise" dress, made in the USA (c/o Zoe Boutique) Deeply discounted now at Trina Turk and Zappos; secondhand black leather jacket; sandals (not fair: fair options HERE and HERE); Tarte lipstick PHOTOGRAPHY: my obliging husband.

One of my favorite "colors" to wear during summer is white, white and more white, but I like to toughen it up with a black leather jacket (key for making the switch to frigid blasts of air conditioning in restaurants and stores) and chunky black sandals.

I was able to keep this dress after wearing it as part of the Cobblestone Runway lookbook I was featured in a few months ago (also see behind-the-scenes shots HERE), thanks to the kind folks over at Zoe Boutique. It feels good to put my own twist on styling it.

Sustainable Style: White T-shirt, Black Jeans, Strappy Heels

10 strappy givenchy heels and black paige verdugo skinny jeans copy copy

Today's sustainable style post is one more in what may be a never-ending, lifetime ode to simplicity. A t-shirt and jeans is about as basic as it gets, and you can never go wrong with black and white-- does the creme blazer count as a pop of color? I say yes.

4 eco-friendly summer wardrobe staples

I love fancy heels, but my favorite way to wear them is with jeans, not a fancy dress. And if we're talking about paring down, owning less, and having more, this kind of outfit is one anyone can build from the clothes they already have.

We all have jeans, we all have t-shirts. Throw on your favorite heels and a blazer and you've gone from casual laying-around-the-house-wear to casual cool. The look works in a variety of settings in which you migtht want to look polished, overly formal: first date, dinner and drinks with friends, brunch, or movie night (heels are perfect for movies because you don't have to stand in them! #winning).

Throughout May, I will be working to build a collection of sustainable summer options to share with you. For now, here's how to get today's look fairly:
