Pretty in Pink

Reason  #198 I am obsessed with my new lipstick from Radiant Cosmetics: even though it's technically a bright red, you can apply it, wipe it off, then smooth on a little chapstick or gloss and boom: a rosy pink stain is with you throughout most of the day.

Today is the last day of January and thus the last day of National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Please share or pin this post using #KissSlaveryGoodbye, learn more about human trafficking here, and check out Radiant!

They manufacture a high-quality product right here in the USA and donate 20% of their profits towards anti-trafficking organizations. They're pretty awesome, so I'm doing my best to help them get the word out.

The Perfect Black Bag: An Ebay Round-Up

I have been on a quest for the Perfect Black Bag for quite some time, and perhaps I will be on this quest forever. I want something that works for the office, or for travel, or for weekends. It has to be sturdy. It has to be cool. It cannot have silver hardware (I don't know why, but I only like gold or brass). I love my Matt and Nat bag, but it doesn't fit my laptop, so add that to the list-- must fit my Macbook Air.

I figure that I am not alone in this quest and thought I'd share a few of the treasures I've stumbled across  in my late night Ebay rampages.  Each bag is gently used or vintage, and thus Fair, of course. From top to bottom and left to right:

Happy Bidding!

Kiss Slavery Goodbye

Whatever our jobs may be, it's easy to take for granted that we are in a safe space, performing our duties of our own free will. Though it's a heavy note on which to begin the week, the truth is that too many women around the world are not free to choose how they spend their time on this earth.  January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and here at Fair Vanity, I'm helping Radiant Cosmetics raise awareness of this painful fact.

Radiant Cosmetics is a social enterprise makeup company that donates 20% of their profits to an anti-trafficking organization called Redeemed Ministries. Additionally, through January 31, for each lipstick you purchase, Radiance will donate one lipstick to a current victim or survivor of human trafficking.

Radiant was kind enough to send me a sample of their Flamenco red lipstick and I absolutely love it and can easily recommend it. As you will see in future posts, the color is incredibly versatile because of its high levels of pigment, and it's an on-trend matte that's not drying, which is hard to find. What's more, this particular shade has a candy-colored tint that's less severe than a true red, which makes it work well for day or for night.

I'm also proud to share that Radiant lists all ingredients for every single product, and they manufacture right here in the USA.

If you'd like, you can participate in their campaign, too. All you have to do is send out a couple of tweets or pin an image of their lipsticks or this post-- just remember to include #KissSlaveryGoodbye. Through January 31, I'll be sharing different facts and figures about human trafficking in order to help them raise awareness, and I would love your help in the getting the word out. In the meantime, you can learn more about human trafficking here: http://www.radiantcosmetics.org/pages/human-trafficking

You can also follow me at @fairvanitydc on Twitter or instagram and retweet/repost my updates this week to help bring awareness to the plight of daughters, sisters and mothers around the world who are living and working as modern-day slaves.

Rent the Runway Pop-up Showroom: Love at First Sight

My friend Alex and I checked out the Rent the Runway pop-up shop last Sunday at the Living Social event space and...I fell in love.

It was beyond my control. When I saw that gold brocade shift dress by Vera Wang I knew it would fit. But I didn't know how well it would fit, and that I would later be scouring the interwebs to find this beautiful, made in the USA, Frank Lloyd Wright-esque dress. Don't even try, it's sold out everywhere. I love it so much that I was terrified to post it here and share its existence with the world.  I promise that if you find it somewhere in size 0, I will pay you a finder's fee, and I will wear it everywhere-- brunch, dinner, work events, shopping...EVERYWHERE.  But I digress...

Obsessively chasing after a dress is not exactly the point of Rent the Runway, which is an amazing company that empowers us all to be fair and kind in the way we shop. How lovely is the idea of so many girls sharing one dress? Talk about recycling and reusing, right? And yes, they dry clean and mend small imperfections between rentings. You don't have to worry about any of that.

How many times have you bought a dress for a wedding or special event, only to wear it mayyyybe once more to a similar event, but otherwise have it hanging in your closet in a zipper bag? Many, I'm betting. Rent the Runway makes it simple to wear the dress you want for way under the retail price, then pass it along to the next girl who needs it.

And, as you can see, they carry a wide variety of silhouettes, styles, lengths, brands, and colors. Alex looked stunning in the few dresses she tried on, don't you think? The navy is Shoshanna and the striped one is Kate Spade. This girl knows what she likes, and exactly what colors flatter her porcelain skin. That is her natural hair color, btw. Dutch girls are so lucky...

So, ladies, if you are still searching for an inauguration dress, get thee to RTR!

I've developed a pretty serious obsession with patterned pants-- jeans, slacks, leggings, it doesn't matter to me, I love them! And one thing I love about wearing nice jeans is how surprisingly versatile they can be. In each of these looks, for example, the only thing I changed was my shoes, and the whole look changes from day to night, doncha think?

If you haven't yet taken the plunge into pattern play, I strongly recommend it. The ones I'm wearing are by JBrand Jeans and I got them for a song during the Spicy Candy DC event at South Moon Under (scroll down to find me). Below, I've assembled a few fair options for you to experiment with, most of which are on sale right now for 50% off, so check 'em out! Each pair is made in the USA.

Did you know that emerald green is the color of the year? Well, it is. Even Pantone says so. I'm already armed with those green color-blocked Koral jeans, so today, I put together a little Etsy round-up for your weekend couch-shopping enjoyment. Each and every item is vintage.

A tweed jacket is one of my favorite staples to throw on when it's cold outside. It works with everything: jeans, trousers, pencil skirts...you really can't go wrong.

I like to tough my tweed up a bit by pairing it with leather-- in this case, a (faux) leather mini, acquired used from Secondi. The pearls are a hand-me-down from my husband's late grandmother, and the ring, by the by, is made of recycled platinum and conflict-free diamonds by Brilliant Earth. Check them out, they're amazing. Last but not least, of course, we have My Precious.

You can achieve the same tweed-with-a-twist effect with coated black jeans, or a tweed dress with a vintage leather jacket, or a tweed skirt and a faux leather peplum top. Something about the classic daintiness of tweed just cries out for edgy leather, don't you think?

Either way, I've scoured the interwebs to find you some fair tweed options at various price points. Hope you like!

My Fair NYE: Style Round Up

gina consumano, myfairNYE, my fair vanity, vintage

rachel, myfairNYE, my fair vanity, vintage

During the #myfairNYE experiment, in which I asked you lovely folks to share your Fair NYE looks, I discovered that vintage clutches are apparently the hottest New Year's Eve accessory to hit town, which makes me very, very happy!

From top to bottom:
  • Ashley is wearing a vintage hand-me-down clutch from her mother-- also love how you paired it with that fab skirt from locally-owned Violet Boutique!
  • Victoria celebrated a friend's nuptials and rang in 2013 in a (rented) Badgley Mischka gown from Rent the Runway. I think RTR is super fair, don't you? I love the idea of women from across the country sharing a dress they will each only wear one time. Less waste in good taste.
  • Sarah is also rocking a vintage clutch from her mother and made in America Alex and Ani bracelets
  • Gina is wearing a vintage belt and handmade earrings (fair trade) from Greece.
  • I wore a vintage clutch from Etsy and a lightly used jacket and bangle from Secondi.
I'm very grateful to all the lovely ladies who helped me show that dressing with kindness is easier than we think. Thank you for sharing your style!
